What is Leucidal Liquid?

Leucidal is a clear to yellow liquid used as a natural preservative in cosmetics. It is most popular amongst those who only use natural ingredients in a product.

It is a water-soluble, antimicrobial peptide originally derived from lactic acid bacteria. It is produced through fermentation, which produces antimicrobial peptides. Leucidal systems are better described as bacteriostatic rather than fully bactericidal, as it slows bacterial growth rather than killing it.

It's used as a preservative in personal care formulations as it can provide some protection against bacteria, yeast, and mold.

However, leucidal liquid does not provide broad spectrum antimicrobial protection. It provides some protection, but it often needs additional support. Leucidal doesn't kill microorganisms, it slows bacterial growth meaning it relies heavily on additional support within a formula.

It works best in a formula with low water activity, low contamination risk, acidic pH and products supported by excellent manufacturing hygiene.

It is heat stable up to 70°C and active under both acidic (pH 3) and basic conditions (pH 8). It's typically added during the cooling phase below 70°C.

What Is Leucidal Liquid Be Used For?

Leucidal liquid can be used as a preservative to provide antimicrobial protection. It also works as a moisturising active, providing a 10% increase in moisturization at 1%.

It is water soluble and its suggested use level is between 2% and 4%.

It can be used in personal care formulations and other cosmetic products for moisturisation, skin care, support for scalp conditions and antimicrobial properties. It helps calm irritation and supports a healthy skin barrier. It also contains salicylates that gently exfoliate the skin.

What is The INCI Name For Leucidal?
